  • AA filtering | interesting differences quality/time

I tested a few filters using adaptive QMC antialiasing. THe first image has filtering turned off. As you can see the reflection in the curved chrome front of the chair becomes jaggy with certain filters. No filter renders the fastest.

I also noticed that using Cook-Variable, it gives a smooth result without blurring the image too much at very few extra rendering time. Unsharp masking this in Photoshop Makes the image about as sharp as Catmull-Rom but with less jagged lines, again best noticed in the chrome reflection of the chair.

excellent job man! good info. I really like the Mitchell Netravelli filter myself. Very customizable.

Thanks for the info Gijs, a picture is worth a thousand words.

I also favor the Mitchell Netravelli in my work. In your tests it only has slighty more jaggies than the photoshopped Cook and without the extra work. What were your ringing/blur values on the Mitchell?

        Thanks for your appreciation.

I used standard values for these images. I agree that the quality of Mitchell Netravali is very near, but as you can see it renders slower than cook and unsharp mask costs virtually no time, since I always slightly adjust in Photoshop anyway.

A couple of weeks ago I did a quicker test only with Mitchell, Catmull and none and found none to be so much faster that I started switching it of by default. Until this came up with the jaggy highlights.

What values do you use for Mitchell BTW?
